Good "old" (yeh, right) Cheli says "TAKE THAT" What an elbow he gave to Mr. Shark - Joe Thornton with 7 seconds left last night - I think he was still saying you guys aren't that tough - too bad it wasn't Kyle McClaren though. He took out Drake early on, and no penalty was called - guess you had to see it to believe it!! Does anyone think that the refs hold the RW's to higher standards - or just that they like to "challenge" them and see what happens.

Ooo, Jack. This is a big issue, isn't it? Oddly, others have spun full-fledged conspiracy theories about NHL officiating, citing examples such as the Annaheim debacle as proof that the League manipulates penalties in an attempt to promote certain franchises. A recent letter to The Hockey News brought up this touchy subject. www.thehockeynews.com/en/newsroom/news.asp?idNews=26164The author cites two examples of gross infractions by Chris Pronger committed in a two-week span that netted the Annaheim D-man a one-game suspension. He added: "Both infractions were vicious headshots, but because it was Chris Pronger, a superstar, and he played for a team who in my opinion the NHL wanted to win the Stanley Cup, he was given the absolute least they could!" There's no question that the NHL has drooled at the prospect of a LA or NY Cup-winner. They got it, but the marketing dollars haven't materialized, have they? Unfortunately, the Bettman-inspired southern expansion of the NHL has proved disastrous to hockey's natural big markets, like Detroit, Toronto, Boston, etc. Don't you enjoy knowing that these teams pay a luxury tax on their former prosperity? And, of course, the League admits that they continue in their asinine schedule because so many weak markets depend on sellouts when the Wings come to town. Meanwhile, the domestic, northern fanbase has suffered. While the Wings inspire sellouts in places like Phoenix, they have ceased to draw capacity at the JLA. Myself, I've often wondered why the AHL had better officiating than the NHL. After all, the AHL is supposed to be the nursury of the NHL--isn't it? Why so many idiotic calls and non-calls at the NHL level? How do we explain what Holmstrom called a "freak show" in Annaheim? The ever-blunt Chelios publically asked whether the NHL officials went to the same bookies as those in the NBA. Hmm. This could be a great discussion, Jack. Maybe you should post a note on the Griffins side of Griffins Central, since I don't think many members peek over here. I think it's a big issue, because our sport is closer to a collapse than many realize. Chelios has intimated that the organization (NHL) is rotten to the core. We can only wait and see how events unfold.

Thanks Griffreak. I realized AFTER I posted, that it probably should have been in the other heading - oh well, I've been chastised about that before, too
