Chris Osgood signed a 2 yr contract with the Red Wings this afternoon. Not sure who his batterymate will be, lots of rumors about other NHL goalies, and some competition from within with MacDonald, Liv and Howard vying for attention.

Personally, I think Holland is going to see how the prospect camp turns out. I think Joey's the key. I still think it's all smoke and mirrors as far as goalies go. I don't see how he could not sign an NHL guy by now. All of the good ones are pretty much gone. I can see us starting the season with Ozzie and Joey in Detroit, Jimmy and Liv in GR with Drew and Koopmans in Toledo. If Joey's not good to go and Holland doesn't get another NHL goalie I see Liv in Detroit with Howard and Drew in GR. I think Liv's experience and age would give him a slight edge in Detroit assuming he and Jimmy are close talent-wise.
The big issue will be if Holland signs an NHL goalie and has Joey, Jimmy and Stefan vying for 2 spots in GR. One will have to go to Toledo, be traded or loaned, or bought out and released. It could also spell the end for Drew and/or Logan in the Wings organization as well.

I am surprised at the signing of osgood.................what is Holland smoking?...........I would have gone after a #1 freeagent and have either Joey or Jimmy as back up..what he has done is tell these guys they are not good enough to be in the NHL at this point even as back up...this is what I do not like about the way Detroit operates.....they have little faith in the players from the minor league system

Holland has said all along he wanted to re-sign Osgood. If he goes for a UFA goalie he's pretty much limited now to Belfour, Hasek and guys with very little NHL experience. There are some very good Group 2 guys out there like Lehtonen and Niittimaki but they would require compensation and are still unproven. Both were rookies last year but have huge potential. Marc-Andre Fleury is also a Group 2 and with Pittsburgh's financial situation up in the air he could generate some interest from teams willing to part with the high compensation. Again, unproven over time but high potential.
I still feel he's waiting on Joey. He's trying to get out of this cheap and with Ozzie as #1 and Joey on the bench he accomplishes this. They were prepared to give Joey the backup role. Had he not injured his back I believe the Wings would have had Legace and Joey in Detroit last season. Osgood was signed because Joey's back wasn't up to it and Ozzie was cheap. I can see the Wings waiting and picking up a veteran #1 guy through a trade if Joey can't cut it.
